Penny Wars raises money for the Addison Foundation. Kids put pennies in their grade's jar and the silver and dollars into other grades' jars each morning before school and the night of the Giggling Gator Show on 1/29. Pennies are worth points for the grade level, silver coins and dollars (or checks) take away points. The grade that ends up with the highest total points wins a hot chocolate party for the whole grade at recess.
The students all started a Hero writing piece in class before Winter Break. Any student that would like to edit their piece and create a final copy at home to turn in for the Reflections contest can ask for a form from Mrs. Warren. Here is some information about the Program.
East Cobb County Council of PTAs 2015-16 Honoring Our Heroes Program Everyday Heroes: The Power of One Honoring Our Heroes is a student writing program designed for you to write about your real-life heroes and role models. The person you write about should display one or more of the following characteristics: generosity, trust, persistence, dedication, leadership, creativity, caring, bravery, imagination, service, gentleness, courage, or compassion. We want you to redefine media-hyped and cartoon heroes such as professional athletes, movie stars, and rock musicians and instead recognize someone who has made a more personal impact on your life such as a family member, doctor, public safety officer, soldier, or teacher. Essay Rules and Guidelines
Judging Rules and Guidelines Entries will be judged on the student’s ability to articulate the qualities of the hero and to describe the manner in which the hero has impacted the student’s life. ECCC will hold a special reception to recognize the first place winner from each grade level at each school. In addition, every writer who fits in the Special Artist category (as defined by Georgia PTA’s Special Artist category for the Reflections competition) will also be recognized. Entries are due by January 22, 2016. At the Brook and Branch puppet show about Habitats today, Hope asked a question that the presenters couldn't answer. They did promise to find the answer and send it. I received this email after we went home. Here is the answer to your question Hope!
Email from Ms. Angie with Brook and Branch: Could you pass this along to Hope to answer her question if the Alabama Hog Sucker is a suckerfish. Thanks for the great question Hope! “Sucker fish” is the name of a family of different types of fish. There are lots of different types of sucker fish. One type is a Hog Sucker that is named for its hog shaped mouth. Under that is the Alabama Hog Sucker, which was first found in Alabama. So yes, the Alabama Hog Sucker is a type of Sucker Fish! Thanks for asking questions that make me think too! Ms. Angie As you know the students have been working for months to learn their multiplication facts. We continue to take timed tests each Friday. We are focusing on 7's and 8's this week, but your child knows what timed test they will take on Friday based on which one they have or have not successfully completed. First in Math has several games to increase speed and help memorize facts and using songs has also been helpful. I am adding links to the sidebar for different songs that we have used in the classroom that could be enjoyed and used at home ti reinforce and assist in memorization.

Students were so excited to crack open their geodes on Thursday. Hopefully they all made it home safely. Today students are bringing home crystals that they grew in science lab from a mixture of Borax and water. Their crystals should be taken out of the plastic bag and dried to avoid molding.
Here is a quick look at what we will cover this week: Social Studies- Today we learned to identify the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains on a US map, and we started our famous people study with Paul Revere. You will receive a newsletter tomorrow with some background information and fun facts. This is part of a program called "Court 2 You".) Math- Two step word problems. We will be working in small groups and in centers to practice this difficult skill.
