Reading: Our activities this week in reading will center around The Polar Express.
Monday- Vocabulary and Dictionary skills. Tuesday- We will read the book and talk about the point of view, characters, and write a summary. Wednesday- We will look at the non-literal language (similes and metaphors) used to bring the story to life. Friday- We will watch Polar Express and compare and contrast the movie to the text. We will discuss how the movie is told from a different point of view. Social Studies- We are continuing to learn about Susan B. Anthony. We will talk this week about character traits she displayed and obstacles she overcame in fighting for women's rights and the abolition of slavery. Test on Thursday. Math- We are finishing up studying properties that help us with multiplication. The commutative property: If 2x3=6, then 3x2=6. The Associative property: 2x3x5 can be solved by first multiplying 2x3 and then multiplying the product by 5 (2x3=6 6x5= 30) or by first multiplying 3x5 and then multiplying the product by 2 (3x5=15 15x2=30). The Distributive property: 5x7 can be decomposed into (5x5) + (5x2). We are continuing to work on 2 step word problems. Math test of properties and 2 step word problems on Wednesday. Writing: Biographies. Spelling: No spelling list or spelling test. A homework packet including a reading log will take the place of traditional spelling homework. Special events: Thursday: Media Center- Holiday book and check out (bring any books to return, Holiday Party (please send in suggested donations by Tuesday- this is not required) Friday: Holiday Sing-a-long, Polar Express, Light Bulb Lab

Social Studies- We are really enjoying learning about famous people!
Monday: Frederick Douglass test. Tuesday -Friday: Susan B. Anthony Writing- We are working on Biographies of famous historical figures. Students have chosen to write a biography on Paul Revere, Frederick Douglass, or Susan B. Anthony. Math- We are learning the distributive, associative and commutative properties and how they can help us solve multiplication problems. Everyone did very well on the Area post-test. :0) Reading- We will take the SRI again on Monday to assess growth in reading. We will also be working on extended response comprehension questions. You can help your child in this area by having them write in complete sentences when appropriate on the reading log. Spelling-List 14
