A change in Spelling Homework. In an effort to cut down on unnecessary homework, students will now be allowed to lessen their spelling homework by practicing only the words they miss on a spelling pre-test. All students took a spelling pre-test on Thursday. Your student should have the words missed written into their spelling spiral. If a student missed less than 5 words, I will add a few words to their lists. Some students were able to spell all Unit 19 words correctly on the pre-test and they moved on to a challenge list that created from the 3rd grade National Spelling Bee list. Students will still need to do enough activities to get 40 points, but they will complete those activities with fewer words.

Please encourage your child in doing their homework to always answer a word problem with a complete sentence that answers the question of the word problem. Science- We will be talking about Weathering and Erosion this week and will have a test on Friday. The students will bring home a study sheet on Wednesday. Students will be responsible for knowing how wind, water, ice, and plants changes rocks and soil through weathering and erosion. Important Vocabulary: Weathering: the breaking down of rocks by wind, water, ice and plants. Erosion: the washing away or movement of pieces of rocks, sediment, and soil by wind or water. The class with the highest Foundation participation (meaning the class with the most people making donations, not with the highest amount collected) will win an extra i-pad for their class use. We use i-pad for center rotations everyday in math and reading. Thank you for your support!
The Foundation Funding Drive is running through September 9. This is the Foundation's largest fundraiser for the year to help continue to keep our Science Lab going as well as provide other enrichment for the students and resources for Addison. The new digital marquee out front is a gift from Foundation, as well as $15,000 worth of new iPads this year for the classrooms! The top two classes participating in the Drive in each grade level will receive an additional iPad, too!! A percentage of the funds raised also comes directly into our classroom.
And... When we hit $20,000, Mrs. Hallmark and Mr. Cohen will spend some time up on the roof for all to see!!! When we hit $25,000, they will KISS A PIG!! When we hit $30,000, the kids will get to tape Mrs. Hallmark and Mr. Cohen to the WALL. Please support us in this effort! Visit www.foundation4addison.org for details on Foundation and the Funding Drive. Math- Subtraction with regrouping. We are learning the standard algorithm that we all used growing up so help your children with confidence. The only difference is that we no longer say borrow. We always talk about regrouping the numbers. Some students are trying to subtract the bottom number from the top to remind them we are using a little rhyme More on the floor~Go next door.
Math Practice- We are working on fluency with addition and subtraction facts. websites: math magician, abcya.com Writing- We are continuing to work on our opinion pieces. Question for conversation: What strong opinion are you writing about in your paper? What are your reasons for your opinion? Reading- Character Analysis. You could replace the word feelings with actions, sayings, or thoughts as the week progresses. Science- Rocks and Minerals. Questions for conversations: What is the difference between a rock and a mineral? What are the properties of rocks? What type of rocks did you learn about today? Properties- color, streak, luster, hardness, cleavage Types of Rocks- Igneous (Tues), Sedimentary (Wed), Metamorphic (Fri) Review: Map skills: Latitude, Longitude, Prime Meridian, Equator. Ask your student to teach you our song. Longitude and Latitude Song Ask them to locate Greece on a map. I have just added links to "Book Wizard" and "Common Sense Media" Reviews to our links.
"Book Wizard" is a database where you can access the lexile level and age of interest for books your child might be choosing to read. "Common Sense Media" has book reviews giving books an age appropriate rating and breaking down the rating into different categories such as educational value, positive message, violence, and language. It will also list any mature themes that might be found in a book. This website is helpful if your child is reading above their grade level. We have had a great first week in Mrs. Warren's class!
